Shy Shy

2024, Chelsea

Nestled in the heart of New York City, Shy Shy pays homage to the natural beauty of its namesake Pacific Northwest beach. This newly designed cocktail bar, created by Beaudry Collier, effortlessly blends elegance with a sense of playfulness, offering a space that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Every corner tells its own story, inviting guests to explore and linger. The design draws inspiration from the organic elements of Shy Shy Beach, pairing warm sunset hues, iridescent shell tones, and whimsical patterns with luxurious materials. The result is a richly layered environment that reflects the subtle beauty of the Pacific coastline while catering to the vibrant energy of city nightlife.

Murals by LA-based artist Jessalyn Brooks grace the walls, complementing the soft curves of the architecture. Earthy limewash textures are paired with refined accents like gold leaf and stained glass, mirroring the delicate beauty of an oyster shell. These elements, combined with the rich hues of Pierre Frey textiles, create a sensory experience that is both grounded and ethereal.

The narrow, long layout typical of New York spaces posed a challenge, as did the lack of natural light. However, a fortunate discovery during demolition revealed previously hidden exterior windows and an additional two feet of ceiling height. These features became central to the design, enhancing the light quality and spatial flow.

To meet both aesthetic and functional goals, the space was organized into four distinct zones, each catering to different experiences. From a welcoming entry lounge to an elevated dining area and a show-stopping bar at the rear, each zone was designed to seamlessly guide guests through the space while setting the stage for memorable evenings.

Upon entering, guests are greeted by large windows that flood the space with natural light, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere. A lacquered red bar serves as the focal point, while a reflective gold-leafed cove behind it casts a warm, sunset-inspired glow.

A cozy banquette-lined alcove, separated by a dramatic curtain, offers an intimate space for private events or larger gatherings. The thoughtful layering of textures and materials—including limewash walls, Pierre Frey textiles, and rose-tinted stained glass—sets the tone for the evening ahead.

As the eye follows the long bar, it’s drawn upward to a gold-leafed cove that houses an embedded disco ball, evoking the shimmer of tidal pools along the Pacific coast. This transitional area not only serves as a functional hub but also transforms into a dance floor during late-night hours, infusing the space with energy and movement.

The heart of the design is the elevated dining space, accessed through a grand arched entrance that frames the illuminated horseshoe bar at the rear. Banquettes upholstered in jewel-toned Pierre Frey velvets and aubergine leather provide flexible seating for both intimate dates and larger gatherings. The architecture’s undulating curves echo the soft, organic forms of Shy Shy Beach, fostering a sense of harmony and flow.

At the far end of the space, a dramatic semi-circular bar commands attention. Rotated outward to the center of the room, it draws patrons to the back while creating an intimate enclave ideal for private parties. Sea glass-inspired stained glass windows, discovered during construction, filter light into the room, casting delicate patterns that recall the dappled glow of a Pacific sunset.

Shy Shy is more than a cocktail bar—it’s a celebration of place, memory, and design. From its carefully curated materials to its innovative layout, every detail was crafted to transport guests to the Pacific Northwest while embracing the spirit of New York City nightlife. Whether you’re stopping by for a drink at the bar, gathering with friends, or dancing the night away, Shy Shy promises an unforgettable experience.
